St. Lucie Mosquito Control Areas Reopen on South Hutchinson Island

Post Date:12/01/2017 10:02 AM

St. Lucie County’s Mosquito Control District has completed repairs and reopened all of its properties on South Hutchinson Island. Impoundment areas have been closed since Hurricane Irma caused more than $4 million in damages to dikes, culverts and piers.

Starting Monday, Dec. 5 the following Mosquito Control areas are open for passive recreation: Bear Point Sanctuary, John Brooks Riverside, Vitolo Family Preserve and Blind Creek Riverside (pedestrian access only). However, the pier and wildlife observation tower at Bear Point Preserve remains closed.

Repairs are continuing at impoundment/preserves on North Hutchinson Island along with D.J. Wilcox Preserve and Harbor Branch Preserve on the mainland.

Last year, Hurricane Matthew caused more than $2 million in damages and forced the temporarly closure of more than 20 impoundments and natural areas along the barrier islands.

St. Lucie County’s Mosquito Control impoundment areas are located in coastal wetlands and marshes and are used to control mosquitoes by flooding breeding areas, while at the same time providing public access to recreational amenities such as fishing, hiking and bird watching.
