District 2: Doug Coward
Commissioner Doug Coward (Democrat) has been in Florida since 1984 and moved to St. Lucie County in 1991. He graduated from Florida State University with a master's degree in urban and regional planning and a dual bachelor's degree in the social sciences and geography. He has worked as a professional planner for St. Lucie County, 1000 Friends of Florida, and the private sector. His wife Tara is an Ultrasound Technician, and they have one son, Ty Benjamin, who was born in July of 2002.Commissioner Coward was sworn into office in 1998 and re-elected in 2002 and 2006. In addition to his service on the Board of County Commissioners, he also serves as the chairman of the Environmental Control Board and on the following committees: St. Lucie County Fire Board, Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council, Florida Regional Council Association, the Local Government Subcommittee, the Weed and Seed Steering Committee, the St. Lucie County Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Land Acquisition Selection committee, and the Tourist Development Council.
Commissioner Coward also volunteers as a board member with St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity. Commissioner Coward has been the recipient of four statewide awards including: "Conservation Leader" from the Florida Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, "Community Steward" from 1000 Friends of Florida, "Public Official of the Year" from the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (FAPA), and most recently, the "Maggie Bowman Award" by the Marine Resources Council for outstanding service to the Indian River Lagoon by an elected official.
