January 13, 2005 - Information on How to Prevent the Spread of Citrus Canker in St. Lucie County
Citrus Canker is in St. Lucie County and there are some things you can do to ensure the future of Citrus in St. Lucie County in your own yard and in the grove, according to the St. Lucie County Agriculture Extension Office. The office is strongly encouraging that residents pay attention to the following information:· Do Not remove any citrus plants/trees. Pruning is permitted; double bag debris and place at the curb.
· Do Not exchange citrus fruit with neighbors.
· Do Not bring citrus leaves or fruit to the St. Lucie County Extension office, instead call the Citrus Canker Eradication Program 772-429-2000 to request someone verify your citrus problem is canker-free.
· Do Call Florida Department of Agriculture (772) 429-2000 prior to shipping (mailing) any citrus fruit to schedule an inspection of citrus plants/trees/fruit.
· Do Use a solution of chlorine bleach and water (one ounce chlorine bleach in one gallon water and apply with a sprayer to point of run-off) to decontaminate any equipment or tools used on property or near citrus plants/trees. Equipment must be free of debris for thorough coverage and decontamination.
· Do Request Lawn Maintenance/Landscape Company to clean and decontaminate their equipment and personnel before and after working on your property.
