Thursday, May 15, 2008 - Comm. Smith Helps Fund School's Odyssey

Local students at Morningside Elementary School have earned the distinct honor of competing in the World Championships for Odyssey of the Mind.  Their only obstacle - coming up with the funding to get to Maryland to compete at the end of this month.  When St. Lucie County Commissioner Joe Smith heard their plight, he decided to step up and help by providing $1,000 towards the trip.

On the morning of Monday, May 19 at 10 a.m., Commissioner Smith will be presenting a check to the Odyssey of the Mind team at Morningside Elementary School, located at 2300 Gowin Drive, Port St. Lucie.

The $1,000 will be coming out of a pot of money donated to the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners by a developer several years ago.  Each commissioner was given $50,000 to donate to the organizations of their choice throughout the county.  The money is allocated to 501c3s through grant agreements.  Other grant recipients include ARC of St. Lucie County, The American Cancer Society, The Avenue D Boys Choir, The Humane Society and Alzheimer’s Community Care.
