Friday, June 13, 2008 - Savannas Holds Great American Campout June 28

St. Lucie County's Savannas Recreation Area will host ''The Great American Backyard Campout'' on Saturday, June 28.

In partnership with the National Wildlife Federation, St. Lucie County's Parks and Recreation staff will offer a variety of camping-related activities including kayaking, identifying wildlife tracks, observing aquatic species in the Savannas, building a campfire, making s'mores and more.

Campers must bring their own tents, food and drinks. The cost to participate in this overnight event is $25 for a family of four, which includes the camp rental and activities. Each additional guest will be charged $4. This is a family event, and parents must accompany their children. Campers can set up after 9:30 a.m. with activities starting at 2:30 p.m.

The deadline to register for ''The Great American Backyard Campout'' is Thursday, June 26. Space is limited to 20 tents. A list of suggested camping supplies is available upon request. For more details or to register, call Brian at (772) 464-7855 or e-mail savannas@stlucieco.gov.

Located at 1400 E. Midway Road in Fort Pierce, the Savannas Recreation Area is a 550-acre park open seven days a week from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. for overnight camping, RVs, hiking, fishing, bird watching and kayak/canoe rentals. The park is operated and maintained by St. Lucie County's Parks and Recreation Department.
