Wednesday, June 25, 2008 - Public Safety Staff To Participate In Amateur Radio Field Day June 28-29

Amateur radio operators, including members of St. Lucie County's Public Safety Department, will gather at Indian River Community College (IRCC) June 28-29 for their annual Field Day event.

Hosted by the Fort Pierce Amateur Radio Club and IRCC, with the support of  St. Lucie County Emergency Management staff and the Port St. Lucie Amateur Radio Association,  this year's event will include the transmission of live television to the 911 Center and ''wireless e-mail'' alternatives to the internet.

The public is invited to attend and participate in the Amateur Radio Field Day. During these events, radio operators run their equipment for a 24-hour period in emergency operations mode, meaning that everything is powered with generators. These annual events are an excellent way for radio operators and public safety officials to work out technical problems before hurricane season hits its peak.

The St. Lucie County Field Day event is open to expert and novice amateur radio operators. While the Field Day is focused on setting up temporary portable stations, running on emergency power, stay-at-home and mobile unites are allowed to participate. IRCC is located at 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce.
