Ten Mile Creek Retention AreaIn June, 1997, the St. Lucie County Commission adopted a Stormwater Management Program for the unincorporated portion of the County. Our mission is to manage County stormwater systems to prevent flooding and property damage and to protect water quality for the safety and enjoyment of the citizens of St. Lucie County and for the preservation of the environment and enhancement of wildlife habitat.

The cities of Ft. Pierce, Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie Village, located in St. Lucie County, carry out most of the stormwater management responsibilities within their corporate boundaries. In the unincorporated portion of the County, stormwater management responsibilities are shared by the South Florida Water Management District, the North St. Lucie River Water Control District, Fort Pierce Farms Water Control District and St. Lucie County. The County government's role includes maintenance and cleaning of roadside swales and drainage ditches and cleaning of some of the larger canals in the western reaches of the County. The County also replaces deteriorated roadway culverts and stormwater drainage pipe systems, and develops plans to improve flood protection and improve the quality of stormwater that discharges to our water bodies.

Public Education is key to improving the quality of stormwater that runs off into our waterbodies.  The majority of stormwater that drains off the land in St. Lucie County eventually makes its way to the Indian River Lagoon.  It is much easier and cost effective to keep pollutants out of stormwater runoff than it is to remove them once they are in it.
