To participate in the February Water Safety Instructor classes: Candidates must be at least 16 years old, pass the pre-course exam; have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Instructor Training course and have 100 percent participation in the Water Safety Instructor course.
Participants will need to demonstrate the basic understanding and ability to perform and swim 25 yards of the following strokes: Front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and 15 yards of butterfly. Candidates must also be able to maintain position on their back for one minute in deep water and tread water for one minute.
Participants should plan on an additional 15-20 hours of study time outside of the classroom.
The cost of American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course is $235 ($200 is payable to St. Lucie County and $35 is paid to the American Red Cross). Payment is due upon successful completion of the pre-course.
