The UF/IFAS Extension St. Lucie County in collaboration with the Croc Docs from the UF/IFAS Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center and hosted by the City of Port St. Lucie Utilities presents “Nonnative Reptiles of South Florida.” This presentation is open to the public (pre-registration is required). It is specifically designed to teach public utilities & code compliance employees and Extension volunteers about identification of nonnative lizards and constrictor (especially high priority ones), summarize ecological impacts these animals are having on native wildlife, give reporting protocols when sited, and additional resource for to utilize in the field and in daily life.
Nonnative reptiles are increasingly noticeable on the Florida Treasure Coast. Burmese pythons have been reported on the Treasure Coast. Some are dangerous such as python while others such as Peters’s rock agama and brown basilisks are inhabiting niches used by native reptiles.
Live reptiles will not be used in this training; however, artifacts such as snake skins and bones will be used.
