In recognition of June being National Microchip Month, St. Lucie County’s Animal Safety, Services & Protection Division encourages all residents to make sure their pets are microchipped. To help with this initiative, St. Lucie County is offering free lifetime registration/microchips for pets that belong to residents in the unincorporated area of the county (outside city limits) throughout the month of June. Residents of the City of Fort Pierce and the City of Port St. Lucie may also participate in this event at a cost of $10 for each lifetime registration microchip.
The second annual free microchipping event will take place at the St. Lucie County Animal Safety Shelter, located at 3404 W. Midway Road in Fort Pierce, on Thursdays throughout June (June 6, 13, 20 & 27). Time slots are scheduled every 30 minutes to ensure accuracy in the information being stored on the microchip for the pet and owner. Time slots will begin at 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. (no appointments from 12:30 to 2 p.m.). There is a limit of five microchips per household.
Pre-registration is required by emailing: acvoucher@stlucieco.org with a copy of the pet owner’s driver’s license or Florida ID and current proof of residency that lists your current address. In the email, please also include the following information, which will be assigned to your pet’s microchip once it has been implanted:
- Your first and last name
- Address
- Phone number
- Your email address
- Emergency contact (name and phone number)
Pet owners will also need to provide the following information about the pet you wish to pre-register:
- Type of animal (cat / dog)
- Name of animal
- Sex of animal (male / female; spayed/neutered or intact)
- Age of animal
- Breed of animal (mixed is not a recognized breed)
- Color(s) of the animal with the predominant color listed as primary
All dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers at the time of the scheduled microchip appointment.
Microchips are beneficial in the event the pet goes missing, is found and/or is brought to a veterinary facility or Animal Services to be scanned for a microchip. The owner’s information is attached to the microchip, allowing the pet owner to be contacted immediately, so they can be reunited with their pet. Everyone knows how easy it can be to lose track of your pet, even for a second. This month aims to reduce pet owners’ stress and worry if their pets go missing by encouraging microchipping.
Payment for services provided to city residents will be collected on the day of their appointment. Payments can be made using exact cash (no change is able to be provided), check or credit/debit card (service fee).
