Dr. Gail Hansen will be leading a workshop on the basic elements and principles of urban landscape design on Thursday, June 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Indian River Research and Education Center, located at 2199 South Rock Road in Fort Pierce.

Dr. Hansen has a doctorate in Landscape Architecture and serves as the State Extension Specialist for Sustainable Landscape Design and Urban Ecology. She will first cover how to conduct an inventory and analysis of a site and how to interview a client. Then, she will cover style themes and plant characteristics such as form, texture, color and size and how to best utilize these in the landscape. Finally, she will cover design principles such as repetition, unity, dominance, scale and composition, and how an aesthetically pleasing design incorporates each of these.
St. Lucie County Urban Horticulture Extension Agent Elise Schuchman will discuss how the science of proper plant selection informs the design. At the end of the lectures, we will participate in a hands-on activity to implement what we have learned. Florida Friendly Landscape Design books will be handed out to all audience members for you to take home and reference for your own landscapes.
