The purpose of the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) is to present a report to the BOCC every three years on or before December 1st that includes recommendations, evaluations, and implementation of affordable housing in 11 specific areas.

On June 15, 1993, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) adopted Ordinance No. 93-17 which amended Chapter 1-10.5-42 that originally provided for the creation of the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee for the purpose of advising the BOCC on matters relating to codes and regulations that currently precludes Affordable Housing Policies.

On May 27, 2008, the BOCC adopted Ordinance 08-023 that amended the section to further define the membership and duties of the AHAC in accordance with Section 420.9072 of the Florida Statutes.  Then on June 10, 2008, the BOCC adopted Ordinance No. 08-197 appointing the initial members of the AHAC.

The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee shall consist of eleven 11 members as follows:

• A citizen who is actively engaged in the banking or mortgage industry in connection with affordable housing;
• One citizen who is actively engaged in the residential home building industry in connection with affordable housing;
• One citizen who is a representative of those areas of labor actively engaged in home building in connection with affordable housing;
• One citizen who is actively engaged as a for profit provider of affordable housing;
• One citizen who is actively engaged as a real estate professional in connection with affordable housing;
• One citizen who is actively engaged as a not for profit provider of affordable housing;
• One citizen who serves on the local planning agency pursuant to Section 163 3174 Florida Statutes;
• One citizen who resides within the jurisdiction of the local governing body making the appointments;
• One citizen who represents employers within the jurisdiction;
• One citizen who represents essential services personnel as defined in the local housing assistance plan;
• One citizen who is actively engaged as an advocate for low income persons in connection with affordable housing.

• Each commissioner shall appoint two 2 members to the committee.
• The committee members terms shall run concurrent with the term of the appointing commissioner
• A commissioner may remove his appointee from the committee at any time with or without cause.
• The BOCC shall appoint one at-large member to the committee.
• The at-large member shall not serve more than two consecutive full four 4 year terms.
• The BOCC may remove the at-large member with or without cause at any time upon the affirmative vote of a majority of the Board

• The AHAC is usually convened a year before the report is due to the BOCC, then a meeting schedule is put into place to meet the time frame necessary to compete the report by its due date to the BOCC.
