On May 2, 2017 the St. Lucie County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution recognizing Susan Broom Kilmer for her many contributions as St. Lucie County Library Director and renaming the Fort Pierce Branch Library as the Susan Broom Kilmer Branch Library in her honor.

Susan Broom Kilmer served as the St. Lucie County Library Director from 1988 to 2010, and it was under her direction that the Lakewood Park, Zora Neale Hurston, Morningside and Fort Pierce Branches were built. She also oversaw the cooperative agreement with Indian River State College that resulted in the Pruitt Campus Joint Use Library. Previous to becoming director she worked as the Library's Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian, and she was a tireless advocate for library services and literacy. She was also a community advocate who served on numerous boards, including those of the Big Brothers, the Big Sisters, Learn to Read and United Way.

Ms. Kilmer was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 2005 for her part in creating the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail.
