Mosquito Control Performance Measures

St. Lucie County BOCC Mission

Objective:
- Protect the public health from the threat of disease vectoring and nuisance mosquito populations by using an Integrated Mosquito Management approach that relies on industry recognized best management practices.
- Address population growth within and outside the mosquito control district boundaries.
- Make needed repairs to impoundment pump stations.
Performance Measures
Education
- Participate in 7 outreach events including gambusia giveaways twice a year and an annual tire round up.
- Obtain needed CEU’s and license renewals for all positions that require PHPC licenses.
Vector and Disease Surveillance
- Perform Ramp Testing weekly at sentinel chicken locations. Over 120 tests total.
- Draw blood weekly from sentinel chickens to submit to state for testing for West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, and Highlands J Virus. Over 1200 samples. 7 coops with 6 chickens each bled weekly for 33 weeks.
- Set and collect 7 CDC Light Traps weekly (350 annually)
- Set and collect 34 BG counters 5 days a week (8500 annually)
- Minimum of 3200 of Landing Rate Counts performed each year.
- Perform quarterly CDC Bottle Bioassays with control products on disease vectoring mosquito populations.
- Contribute to ongoing mosquito research on abundance and resistance with Florida Medical Entomology Lab, USDA, CDC, and other Mosquito Control Districts.
Source Reduction
- Manage 4,400 acres of Mosquito Impoundments along Indian River Lagoon to limit available oviposition sites for salt marsh mosquitos.
- Tip and Toss standing water from artificial containers to eliminate mosquito habitat.
Kill Adult and Larval Mosquitos
- Provide treatments for adult nuisance mosquito populations in accordance with the product label and state and federal guidelines.
- Larval Control performed as needed in accordance with the product label and state and federal guidelines.
- Pre and Post larval and adult mosquito surveillance (landing rates, trap counts, and larval dips) will be conducted to ensure efficacy of treatments.
Respond to Health Departments Info on Vector Borne Disease Transmission as Needed
- Respond to Data provided by the Florida Department of Health within one business day. Responses should align with the St. Lucie County Vector Borne Disease Response Plan.
Staffing and Infrastructure
- Ensure adequate staffing is in place to meet the needs of the growing population within the district.
- Add Entomological Inspector III position.
- Repair or replace fog truck carport to protect ulv fog equipment and trucks.
- Address need for more lab equipment and additional staff by extending the inspection building (design and engineering) or purchasing a modular lab until a facility master plan can be completed.
- Make needed repairs to Impoundment 9 pump station.
