Hurricane Season Begins June 1st!

Are you prepared for hurricane season? There are important steps that should be taken before, during, and after a storm. Hurricane season officially begins June 1st and ends November 30th.

Prior to hurricane season

  • Now is the time to service your generator and dispose of any bad gasoline.
  • Clean your yard of any items that could become missiles in a storm such as broken lawn furniture.
  • Now is the time to trim trees and plants - do not wait for a hurricane warning!
  • Please trim trees and shrubbery regularly. Cut weak branches and thin out foliage to decrease the chance that trees/plants will be uprooted.
  • Place yard waste at the curb in lengths no longer than 4 feet each and weighing no more than 50 lbs each.
  • Loose debris such as leaves and twigs must be containerized in garbage cans or bags.
  • Please do not trim vegetation just before a storm as it will not be collected until after the storm.

When a storm is heading our way:

  • Do not cut down trees or do major yard work.
  • Do not begin construction projects that produce debris.
  • Once a watch or warning has been issued, do not trim vegetation of any kind. Mass cutting places a tremendous burden on the collection process.
  • Please secure your recycling carts and garbage cans so they do not become flying debris.

After the storm:

  • Please separate yard waste from other types of debris. Keep all household garbage, vegetation and miscellaneous debris separate. This is essential for recovery efforts.
  • Securely containerize all household garbage in garbage cans or bags and place curbside on your scheduled collection day.
  • Be mindful of trees and power lines. Trucks cannot pick-up debris piles underneath them.
  • Please be patient and be kind to each other.
