The purpose of the Indigent Cremation program is to provide final disposition, in accordance with Florida law, for those persons who have no family or cannot afford private funeral arrangements. In order to qualify for this program, the following criteria must be met:

  • The death must have occurred in St. Lucie County. The decedent does not have to be a county resident.
  • The decedent cannot have assets over $750 at the time of death. All assets less than $750 will be deducted from the final costs. If the decedent was legally married, marital assets must be used to determine eligibility.  If an individual is under 18 years of age, the parent’s assets are used to determine eligibility. Verifying documentation required.
  • The decedent’s next of kin shall mean a "legally authorized person" as defined by Florida Statue 497.005(43).

Assistance is only provided for basic cremation needs. Burial expenses, embalming, viewing or memorial services are not provided.

Only the funeral homes listed below are eligible to participate in the indigent cremation program. The decedent’s date of death determines which funeral home(s) may be used.
