Going to the Library
Prepare your child for a visit to the library by reading them a story with pictures about what they can expect when they get to the library. "Social stories" like this one are especially useful for children with an autism spectrum disorder, but can be used by any parent or caregiver who is bringing a shy or anxious child to a new place for the first time.

The kits check out for two weeks on an adult library card and can be renewed three times as long as there are no holds on them. They're packaged in backpacks and include, along with 4 or 6 books on the selected theme, bags of manipulatives and storytelling materials, a folder of songs and rhymes, and several take-home activities. Each kit also includes a list of related internet sites and children's music groups and artists. To see them in our online catalog click here.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a reading initiative to encourage you to read 1,000 books with your child before they enter kindergarten. It's one of the "challenges" in the reading tracker Beanstack (see below), which makes it easy to record the books you read and track your progress. Please note that this challenge will appear only for readers whose age has been entered as zero to 5.
How do I sign up?
Use the app store for your phone or tablet to search for and install the "Beanstack Tracker" app from Zoobean, Inc. If you're on your Android phone now, click here to find the app--if you're on an iPhone, click here. After installing it, (1) click on "Find your School or Library," (2) in the libraries category search for "st. lucie" and (3) select "St. Lucie County Library System." Then click on "Don't Have an Account? Sign Up!" and enter a username and password of your choice.
Or on a computer you can also use the browser version at https://stlucieco.beanstack.org.
If you have trouble with registering staff will be happy to help.
What is Beanstack?
Beanstack is an online and app-based tool you can use to keep track of how much time you and your children spend reading, and which books you've read.
Along with summer reading and other periodic challenges, accounts for children up to 5 years of age will see the "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten" challenge. Accounts for all ages can sign up for reading recommendations. A single account can track reading for an individual or for a whole family.
Thanks to the Friends of the St. Lucie County Library Association, Inc. for making Beanstack available through their generous support.
The internet is an exciting place to visit, but surfing the Internet can also be dangerous. The best filter is not as effective a protection as a parent's awareness of basic safety rules for exploring the virtual world.
