As a matter of public policy, the protection, enhancement, and perpetuation of properties of historical, cultural, archaeological, aesthetic, engineering, and architectural significance are in the best interest of the health, prosperity and welfare of the people of St. Lucie County. As such, the St. Lucie County Historical Commission is hereby created and established as a committee of the St. Lucie County Board of County Commission with the power, authority and jurisdiction to recommend local historic designations; issue Certificates of Appropriateness; and regulate and administer the historical, cultural, architectural and archaeological resources in St. Lucie County, which are complementary to those of the Historic Preservation Officer.
