Treatment

Wastewater collected by the collection system is convey to one the five water reclamation facilities throughout our system. The combined treatment capacity of our water reclamation facilities is XX million gallons per day (MGD) which can serve approximately XX,XXX people.

Each one of the District’s major water reclamation facilities consists of the following main treatment steps:

Preliminary Treatment

The Preliminary Treatment step removes the larger and heavier components of wastewater (see how you can help out this step). Bar screens remove the large objects such as rags, wood, cans, etc. Small heavy materials such as sand and gravel are separated out in a grit removal system. All of the materials removed during this step are deposited into a dumpster and taken to the landfill.

Secondary Treatment

The second major step at our water reclamation facilities is Secondary Treatment. During Secondary Treatment air is pumped into the water to create an environment in which helpful microorganisms or “bugs” can live. The “bugs” eat the harmful organic matter and the wastewater moves on to secondary clarifiers. In the secondary clarifiers the “bugs” and solid waste settle to the bottom and are removed. The remaining clear water moves on to the final step and the process.

Filtration & Disinfection

All of the District’s major water reclamation facilities produces beneficial irrigation quality water used at parks, residential communities, and an area golf course. To achieve this the clear water from the secondary clarifiers is filtered to remove any remaining turbidity and disinfected using chlorine. The irrigation quality water is then stored in tanks ready to deliver to customers.
